Set up
Your own tuner or media server
KimberPlay plays the live channels your own equipment serves on your home network: an HDHomeRun antenna tuner, a Tvheadend server, or channels you build yourself with ErsatzTV or Tunarr. Each one publishes an M3U playlist, and most publish a guide too. Add them like any other playlist.
Before you start
- Use the server’s IP address, such as
192.168.1.20. Names ending in.localoften don’t resolve on TVs. Your router’s device list shows the address; reserve it there so it doesn’t change. - Confirm it’s yours. The first time you add an address on your home network, the TV app asks “Your own server?”. Choose It’s my server. The app only talks to home-network addresses you’ve confirmed, so a playlist from the internet can’t reach other devices in your house.
- Away from home, a Tailscale address (
100.x.y.z) works the same way.
HDHomeRun
- Playlist:
http://<tuner IP>/lineup.m3u. It needs firmware from August 2022 or later. - Guide: HDHomeRun doesn’t publish an XMLTV guide, so add one from a listings service such as Schedules Direct under Settings › TV Guide (EPG) › Backup EPG. KimberPlay matches a channel named “2.1 KATU” to the guide by its call sign or its channel number, so no channel ids are needed.
Tvheadend
- Turn on Persistent authentication for your user in Tvheadend, then use
http://<server IP>:9981/playlist/auth/channels?auth=<code>as the playlist. Each channel carries the code, so streams keep working. - Guide: add
http://<server IP>:9981/xmltv/channels?auth=<code>as a backup EPG. - Don’t use the
/playlist/ticket/address. Its tickets expire, and the channels stop playing after the next library refresh. - A username and password in the address (
http://user:pass@…) also work, as long as Tvheadend’s HTTP authentication type allows plain logins.
ErsatzTV
- Playlist:
http://<server IP>:8409/iptv/channels.m3u. The guide comes with it.
Tunarr
- Playlist:
http://<server IP>:8000/api/channels.m3u. The guide comes with it. Either stream mode, MPEG-TS or HLS, plays.
Which KimberPlay apps can reach them
Fire TV and Android TV
Version 1.16.0 and later. Confirm the server once when you add it, as above. A server running on the TV itself (127.0.0.1) is not supported.
Windows and Linux
Servers on your home network work with their IP address. A server on the same computer (http://localhost:8409/…) and addresses with a username and password need desktop version 0.11.0 or later.
Web player
The web player runs on a secure page, and browsers guard what such a page may fetch from your home network. Chrome and Edge ask once to allow access to devices on your local network, and the server must also allow browser access: ErsatzTV does, Tvheadend does once its CORS origin setting is filled in, and Tunarr doesn’t. Firefox and Safari block it. Even when the playlist loads, the browser may still refuse to play the stream itself. For home servers, use the TV or desktop app.
If something doesn’t work
- “That address is the TV itself or a reserved network”: use the server’s home-network IP instead.
- Channels import but the guide is empty: see the guide checklist. For HDHomeRun, check the backup EPG address first.
- A channel won’t play: open the stream address in a browser on a computer on the same network. If it doesn’t start there either, the server or tuner is the place to look.
KimberPlay is player software only. It works with sources you are entitled to watch, such as free over-the-air broadcasts and your own media.
